You’ll find the bakehouse in the Dingwalls Gallery area of the market, hidden behind a long line of people waiting to choose from a mouth-watering selection of freshly baked cookies, cakes, brownies, pies and doughnuts. The queue speaks volumes: these decadent treats are worth waiting for.
Cookies and Scream first started selling its gluten-free vegan bakes in 2010, from a family-run market stall in Camden Lock. Due its popularity, the business moved inside the market in 2012, opening a permanent cookie bar with a kitchen.
Everything sold here is free from dairy, egg, wheat and gluten. All bakes are low fat, low cholesterol and made with unrefined sugars.
The cookies are big, moist and perfectly baked. There’s a variety to choose from, including choc chip, double choc chip, ginger, oatmeal, Mexican (chocolate and chilli) and peanut butter. The doughnuts are oven-baked (not fried) and are served daily at 2pm, fresh from the oven.
Their bestseller is a cookie or doughnut ‘sandwich’ filled with ice cream or vanilla frosting. It’s hard to believe that any of the bakes are vegan and gluten-free – they taste just as good as their traditional counterparts.
Another popular choice is a thick shake: a combination of ice cream, milk and blended brownie or cookie, served with sauce or fresh fruit. Coffee and tea are available too, if you’re after something warm and simple.
Take away your goodies or pull up a stool at the bar; wherever you choose to eat them, you’ll enjoy them.
